City Fun In 1981 wasn’t just a fanzine to me, it was a window into the world I wanted to be in as a green kid of 16. Liz Naylor and Cath Carroll were the names behind the title and to me they could do no wrong. They awoke my fascination in Manchester, a place I could only be part of when I escaped my home town, Leigh. It may seem strange to some but Manchester was exotic to me. A place where only the coolest people lived and where music was the highest art. What was going on elsewhere at the time: New York The bush tetras hailed from New York and were a post punk / no wave band, predominantly existing in the no wave circle. Cynthia Sley’s lyricism was sassy as hell, and a perfect accompaniment to the damn catchy twang of Pat Place’s guitar (she was one of the founding members of James Chance & The Contortions, another favourite of mine!). Laura Kennedy, Dee Pop and Julia Murphy formed the rest of the band, and my god were they fantastic! You probably know some of their songs, such as “Too many creeps”, “Things that go boom in the night”, “Cowboy’s in Africa”, “Das ah Riot”, “Snakes Crawl” and “You can’t be funky” - but if you don’t, then get onto it stat!
